Canton ranks as 33rd safest community in the nation
February 22, 2013, Canton, MI – Canton has been ranked as the 33rd safest community in the nation, amongst 432 cities/townships with populations over 75,000.
CQ Press provided the ranking which involves a multi-step process using crime statistics from the FBI’s 2011 Crime Report. Crime rates for murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft are plugged into a formula that measures how each city compares to the national average in each given category.
Canton was the highest ranking Michigan community, followed by Sterling Heights coming in at 34th, and Troy at 36th.
Public Safety Director Todd L. Mutchler credits Canton’s low crime rate to several factors. “Our consistently low crime rate can be partially attributed to our proactive method of policing, and our ongoing partnerships within the community,” said Mutchler. “Our police department continues to receive a high level of support from the community and its elected officials,” he adds.
Canton Public Safety consists of both Fire and Police Departments. Both departments are fully-staffed separately, with administration dispatch and records being consolidated. This method of operation allows for an efficient coordination of public safety services while ensuring cost-effectiveness.
As an integral part of Canton government, the Public Safety Department is committed to providing services that contribute to and enhance the quality of life in Canton. The department is recognized within the police and fire communities for its innovative and progressive philosophy of operation and leadership.
Canton Public Safety headquarters is located at the intersection of Canton Center Road and Heritage Park Drive adjacent to Canton's administration building. The headquarters facility houses the department's police operations, administrative offices, communications center, and records bureau. The Fire Department has three stations including a headquarters (#1) at Canton Center Road and Heritage Drive, a sub-station (#2) on Warren Road west of Haggerty Road, and a sub-station (#3) on Denton Road, north of Cherry Hill Road.
